Intergalactic Rescues: Saving Gerry Anderson's Lost Worlds

For over a decade now, we here at Anderson Entertainment have been keeping the astounding imagination of Gerry Anderson alive through bespoke releases, exciting events, brand-new storytelling efforts and more celebratory efforts of his most beloved creations. Alongside his more popular worlds, we've also been breathing fresh life into a variety of his creations that he envisioned during his lifetime, but for various reasons ultimately went unrealised.

Across novelisations, comics, short stories, and in-depth behind-the-scenes revelations, many of Gerry's lost worlds have been preserved and celebrated in a variety of exciting ways. Let's examine how we've been saving these lost creations from Gerry Anderson!

Gemini Force & Storm Force

Our earliest efforts involved bringing a pair of obscure creations to life; one which already had a television series based off of it, and a planned series of novels that went unpublished - Firestorm and Gemini Force One. Gemini Force One was envisioned by Gerry as a series of novels detailing the dangerous heroism of Ben Carrington's efforts to prove himself worthy of being a part of top-secret rescue outfit Gemini Force. Best-selling author M. G. Harris wrote the first novel, Black Horizon, which was brought to life through a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in 2014. Following this limited release, Orion Books acquired the series as a trilogy of adventures.

Black Horizon, White Storm and Ghost Mine were published between 2015 and 2016. This enthralling trilogy is packed with impossible rescues, fantastic technology and dramatically developed characterisations. 16-year-old Ben must prove he has the skillset and spirit to become an elite rescue specialist, all the while the shadow of his deceased father looms large over his growingly dangerous missions. Alongside Gemini Force One's worldwide debut came Firestorm, a science fiction action/adventure television series produced in Ultramarionation, a sophisticated form of puppetry, practical and digital effects that expands on the legacy of Supermarionation for new audiences. Previously produced as an anime for Japanese TV in the early 2000s, Gerry Anderson's Firestorm combines deadly terrorism, deceptive enemies and futuristic action.

Firestorm depicts the missions of Storm Force 9 battling against the fearsome Black Orchid, whose malicious acts of destruction around the globe know no boundaries - but does Firestorm's problems exist from within? Another runaway Kickstarter campaign funded the production of an 9-minute minisode released in 2018, followed by another minisode designed to showcase the advanced animatronics of the Firestorm puppets. Gerry Anderson's 007 & Magnificent 7?

As well as numerous concepts planned for television and books, Gerry developed a plethora of concepts to become blockbuster efforts on the big screen. Of the many cinematic efforts Gerry attempted to realise, one such effort was an adaptation of Ian Fleming's James Bond novel Moonraker. Gerry's son, Jamie Anderson, was interviewed by SpyHards podcast to reveal all about Gerry and Tony Barwick's lost Moonraker script, what the differences between Anderson's outline and the finished film were, and why this incarnation of Moonraker failed to blast off.

Into the 1970s, Gerry's professional relationship with American TV producer Fred Freiberger enabled Space: 1999 to be renewed for a second series. Despite the series' lack of sustained success, the pair continued to collaborate on pair of concepts for American television, neither of which proved enticing enough for networks to take a chance: Starcruiser and Intergalactic Rescue 4. While Starcruiser eventually transitioned into a comic strip in the pages of Look-in, Intergalactic Rescue 4's fate proved separate.

Intergalactic Rescue 4: Stellar Patrol Audiobook [DOWNLOAD] - The Gerry Anderson Store

Envisioned as a blending of Thunderbirds with Lost in Space, IRG4's 10-episode outline was masterfully transformed by author, actor and host of the Gerry Anderson Podcast Richard James into a short story collection, Stellar Patrol, in 2023. Young astronauts Jason Stone and Anne Warren, along with their pair of helpful robot companions, patrol the galaxy aboard the multifunctional space craft Intergalactic Rescue 4. While answering any type of cosmic distress call is all in a day's work for this foursome, IRG4's most challenging mission is the mystery that unfolds within the team itself, as certain members have ulterior motives.

Richard is also responsible for adapting Gerry's unproduced outer space adventure epic Five Star Five in novel form between 2022 and 2023. After a prolonged period in pre-production where it looked as though the making of the film would be a reality, Gerry's take on The Magnificent Seven in space ultimately failed to get the cameras rolling. Richard transformed this lost screenplay into a trilogy of exciting novels full of Star Wars-styled space adventure, bursting with colourful characters and cosmically-charged action. The unambitious John Lovell finds himself tasked with grouping a rag-tag collection of vigilantes to battle against the rising threat of the Zargon empire.

Hidden Secrets

Not every one of Gerry's unrealised creations has succeeded in being realised for new audiences, but that doesn't mean we haven't been sharing secrets from the archives. 2024 marked 25 years of Anderson Entertainment, and in celebration of our landmark anniversary, Jamie Anderson and Fred McNamara conducted an excavation of unrealised treasures from the studio's archive. Concept art and script work for Five Star Five, Starcrusier and other recognisable gems were discussed; however, a great many gems are revealed here that have rarely, if ever, been unveiled publicly.

From violent, high-concept science fiction (Lightspeed, Eternity) to contemporary political assassinations (Shockwave), a vast gothic steam locomotive (The Andermatt Thunderbolt) and sitcoms (Off the Fat of the Land), this in-depth interview reveals the staggering breadth of Gerry's ambitious levels of creativity!

Project SWORD Comic - The Gerry Anderson Store

Even today, more unrealised or otherwise lesser-known characters and concepts from Gerry Anderson's worlds are receiving new leases of life. One such publication brings a powerfully intriguing 'what if' angle to one of Gerry's best-loved creations. Maybe There: The Lost Stories from Space: 1999 sees David Hirsch and Robert E. Wood novelise original outlines of early Space: 1999 scripts, presenting a delightfully authoritative look into the metamorphic style of the series as it was being written. Originally published in hardback in 2022, the book is still available in paperback or Kindle form.

This past year has seen further lesser-known avenues of Gerry's career brought back for modern audiences. In collaboration with Time Bomb Comics: Project SWORD: List of Life reinvigorates the apocalyptic adventure of this cult favourite from the pages of TV Century 21. Written by Lizbeth Myles and illustrated by James Gray, Project SWORD: List of Life sits within the classic SWORD canon to deliver a thrilling saga of humanity on the brink of extinction.

Merry Christmas, Hit Squad!

One particular unrealised concept of Gerry Anderson's is being developed into an adult animated action-comedy series between Hannah-Barbera Studios Europe, Warner Bros. Animation, Mr Morris Productions and Anderson Entertainment. Hit Squad was developed by Gerry in the late 1970s and is being revitalised as an espionage action-comedy set in 1990s London. The series follows an international team of crack-shot spies as they battle hidden foes and dangerous villains.

Hit Squad blends modern puppetry techniques with state-of-the-art digital effects to create a truly modern equivalent of a Supermarionation series for a modern audience, boasting a darker sense of humour and full-throttle adventure. Preview footage of the series debuted at the Annecy Animation Festival in 2016 as part of the festival's animation showcase and was rapturously received by audiences.

Also revealed at this year's Annecy is another Anderson Entertainment production based on another of Gerry's unmade concepts. Merry Christmas, Earthlings! was devised by Gerry much later in his lifetime and is now in development between Anderson Entertainment and Space Age Films. This festive family-friendly animated feature film will be directed by Simone Giampaolo, with a script based on Gerry's own outline and embellished by Jamie Anderson, Keiron Self and Giles New.

Across Gerry Anderson's lengthily career, his unrealised creations present an eclectic array of diverging paths his career may have taken had any number of these worlds become successful creations. How different would spy-fi or sci-fi cinema have looked had Moonraker or Five Star Five been a hit? Whatever the answers, for many of these unknown worlds, we can now enjoy them in a variety of formats, each of them serving as an everlasting reminder of Gerry's sky-high ambition and space-age imagination.
