Into Infinity aboard the Altares
Two families leave Earth aboard an experimental lightship. Their destination is Alpha Centauri, but a journey of scientific discovery becomes a struggle to find a way home when the ship's photon drive carries them far beyond the mission they had planned.
The Day After Tomorrow, also known as Into Infinity, is Gerry Anderson's 1975 television special. Its central craft, the Altares, and its small crew turn ideas about interstellar travel into a personal adventure.
Meet the families
Captain Harry Masters travels with his daughter Jane. Scientists Tom and Anna Bowen are joined by their son David. These are family units sharing an extraordinary experience, rather than a team of secret agents or military specialists.
Nick Tate plays Harry Masters, Brian Blessed plays Tom Bowen and Joanna Dunham plays Anna. Katharine Levy and Martin Lev play Jane and David, while Ed Bishop provides the narration. For Space: 1999 viewers, several voices and faces will be familiar.
Science through adventure
The special was commissioned for NBC's Special Treat strand, with the aim of bringing scientific ideas to a younger audience through an engaging story. Gerry worked with writer Johnny Byrne on an adventure involving relativity, the distances between stars and the hazards of travelling beyond familiar space.
It first aired on NBC on 9 December 1975. Although the ending leaves room for further adventures, it remained a single television special rather than becoming a continuing series.
The connection with Space: 1999
The production was filmed at Pinewood between the two seasons of Space: 1999. Charles Crichton directed, Martin Bower designed and built the Altares, and Derek Wadsworth composed the music. Sets, props and other production elements connect the two worlds behind the scenes.
Those shared makers explain the family resemblance, but Into Infinity has its own purpose and characters. The endangered families aboard the Altares give its space exploration a different emotional focus from life on Moonbase Alpha.
The journey continued on the page
Gregory Norris adapted the special into a novel published by Anderson Entertainment in 2017. A sequel followed in 2019, giving readers a way to continue beyond the television story's open ending. Audio editions bring another way to experience those adventures.
