10 Reasons to Discover the Anderson Originals Super Space Theatre Blu-ray Releases

Prepare to journey into worlds where a mission could become a nightmare, epic encounters with supreme alien intelligences, and beyond! Since 2025, our hugely popular home entertainment releases haven't just consisted of wonderfully restored Blu-ray and 4K releases of many classic series from Gerry Anderson; we've also been releasing definitive collectors editions of the cinematically entertaining, yet undeniably divisive, Super Space Theatre movies.

Let's count down 10 reasons why you should discover the Super Space Theatre Blu-ray releases from our growing Anderson Originals imprint!

10. Classic Gerry Anderson episodes reimagined as cinematic experiences

The Super Space Theatre movies, released between 1978 and 1984, reinvent many of Gerry and Sylvia's classics productions from the 1960s and 1970s for a post-Star Wars sci-fi world. 1978's Destination Moonbase Alpha (not presented as SST, but retroactively branded as such once further compilation movies emerged) began the trend and evidently proved successful enough for further instalments to be produced.

Compiled by super-fan David Hirsch, these compilation films connect several interlinking episodes into, mostly, cohesive cinematic experiences for television. For the hour-long series such as Space: 1999 and Thunderbirds, two episodes each would be bolted together. For the remaining shows (Stingray, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90), four episodes a piece forms each movie. With newly produced opening and closing titles and extravagant laser effects overlayed atop the practical sfx, these elaborate and controversial reimaginings command a tricky reputation. Scenes, dialogue and music cues are edited, or cut entirely, to adjust for fluency, while some movies feature entirely new material to aid in the linking of material.

9. Ongoing home entertainment agreement with ITV

Our SST Blu-ray releases form a unique strand of our Anderson Originals line, packed with newly produced special features, optional soundtracks for either episodic or movie experiences, and even presenting the movies in pristine or retro VHS format. They're also part of our ongoing home entertainment agreement with ITV to release collector-driven Blu-ray and 4K releases of Gerry Anderson's classic worlds. Along with definitive boxsets of the likes of Thunderbirds, Space Precinct and the forthcoming The Secret Service, as well as our 4K restorations of classic Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 episodes, our Super Space Theatre boxsets present these cult interpretations of classic Anderson worlds for fans new and old to savour!

8. A unique time of Anderson's worlds

With their awkwardly inserted alternate soundtracks and less-than-convincing laser effects, there's no denying that the SST movies aren't entirely appreciated. However, they form a compelling chapter within the storied history of these productions. Just as home entertainment was becoming a widely accepted norm through VHS releases, these films allowed older fans to re-experience these series, while simultaneously acquiring newer fans. Well into the 1990s, when younger generations discovered many of Anderson's creations thanks to their BBC reruns, these compilation films remained the only way to experience their respective classic episodes on VHS.

7. Unique presentations of classic Anderson episodes

As well as presenting many classic Anderson series in a tantalisingly 'what-if' cinematic scenario, each and every one of the Super Space Theatre movies prioritises fan-favourite choices of key episodes that are linked by either overarching narratives or similar thematic premises, such as...

6. Thunderbirds' epic disasters

Countdown to Disaster stitches together fan-favourites Terror in New York City and Atlantic Inferno, prioritising some of Thunderbirds' most impressively explosive disasters. While the pairing of series 1 and series 2 episodes results in some visually jarring in the differences between set design and puppetry, the thematic pairing proves successful. Similarly, Thunderbirds in Outer Space brings series 1's Sun Probe with series 2's Ricochet, framing the pair of episodes as occurring almost simultaneously. Thunderbirds to the Rescue places the Fireflash, the atomic-powered passenger jet, front and centre with the welding of Trapped in the Sky with Operation Crash-Dive, a rare sequel episode that makes total sense to bring the pair together into a single event.

5. Space: 1999's cosmic wonder

The Year 2 two-parter The Bringers of Wonder makes for a fantastically edited feature-length presentation for 1978's Destination Moonbase Alpha, while the following three Space: 1999 compilation movies prove equally effective in their episode combinations. Alien Attack melds the unusual pairing of Breakaway and War Games with newly produced scenes to make the viewing experience smoother. Journey through the Black Sun brings Space: 1999's Mysterious Unknown Force front and centre with a well-crafted merging of Black Sun and Collision Course. Cosmic Princess swings to focus on Year 2's breakout star Maya by merging The Metamorph and Space Warp, both of which were heavily edited to present the two episodes as a continuous sequence of events.

4. Captain Scarlet's very real destruction

Captain Scarlet's Super Space Theatre films bear the unusual approach of combining the series' earlier episodes into the second of the two SST films and creating something of a violent finale that the original series, whereas the second SST film crafts an engrossing lunar Martian invasion. Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars merges Shadow of Fear with the Lunarville trilogy of Moon-based episodes, bringing together three interconnected episodes out of four. Captain Scarlet versus the Mysterons merges The Mysterons, Winged Assassin, Seek and Destroy and Attack on Cloudbase into a wilder effort which reimagines the dream-like events of the Mysterons' invasion of Earth as having actually occurred in reality!

3. Stingray's underwater fantasies

The Incredible Voyage of Stingray presents four Marina-centric episodes that heighten Stingray's fantasy leanings, while Invaders from the Deep gets particularly creative in stitching together Hostages from the Deep, Emergency Marineville, The Big Gun and Deep Heat as if they were a continuous flow of events. Invaders from the Deep opens with a cleverly edited extract from Titan, declaring that all of his subjects must wage war against Marineville, presenting the idea that these four separate characters are under Titan's rule and therefore attempting four separate means of assault against Stingray.

2. Brand new compilation adventures

Along with presenting the cult classic Super Space Theatre movies in your choice of pristine high-definition or vintage standard definition, our SST boxsets also feature newly produced compilation adventures! These 'new' adventures bring the spirit of the Super Space Theatre movies into the 21st century, highlighting their popular longevity with Anderson fans. Prisoners in Space, Target: Captain Black! and The Legend of New Captain Scarlet enliven their source material into entertainingly movie-like levels of explosive adventure, heroism and jeopardy!
