Gerry Anderson was diagnosed with mixed dementia (a combination of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia) in 2010, although with the benefit of hindsight, his family believes the condition may have begun as early as 2002. From the moment of his diagnosis, Gerry became a vocal advocate for those facing dementia, dedicating time and energy to supporting the Alzheimer’s Society—a leading charity that not only provides essential help to those living with dementia and their families, but also funds crucial research into treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

Despite his own health challenges, Gerry remained steadfast in his commitment to raising awareness. With the support of his family, he attended numerous events around the country to speak about his experiences, engage with the public, and encourage people to learn more about dementia. His willingness to share his personal journey, combined with the deep compassion he showed for other patients and carers, made him an outstanding ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and a beacon of hope for the wider dementia community.

When news of Gerry’s passing broke, Jeremy Hughes—then Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Society—paid a poignant tribute to his legacy:

“Gerry Anderson has been an outstanding supporter of Alzheimer’s Society and campaigner on behalf of people with dementia. He was determined, despite his own diagnosis in 2010, to spend the last year of his life speaking out for others living with dementia to ensure their voices were heard and their lives improved.

With the support of his family, Gerry tirelessly attended events around the country to raise awareness of the condition and to raise funds for a cure. The last time I saw Gerry was at the start of our annual Memory Walk in September 2012 where he was our guest of honour and star starter alongside Carey Mulligan. Gerry, accompanied and supported by his son Jamie, stayed to speak to the crowds, wave off the walkers and shake hands with the many friends and fans who had come to meet him.

Gerry Anderson will be missed not only by the worldwide fans of his TV shows, but by all of us at the Alzheimer’s Society whom he has inspired to continue in our work to ultimately defeat dementia.”

This heartfelt statement reflects just how deeply Gerry’s advocacy resonated within the charity. He channeled the same pioneering spirit and tenacity that drove his creative career into his fight for dementia awareness, speaking openly about the challenges people with the condition face, as well as the importance of robust support and research.
