Leigh – "Blue Peter and My Tracy Island"

“It was 1993, and I was attending a local Thunderbirds play scheme. One of the activities was building your own Tracy Island.

I put my all into it—cardboard, paint, imagination, the works. I dressed up as Virgil Tracy for the day and felt so proud of my model.

Then Anthea Turner turned up from Blue Peter.

She looked at all the models… and chose mine.

That was the Tracy Island that went out to millions of viewers on Blue Peter.

Somewhere, in a BBC archive, is a shot of me dressed as a Tracy brother, proudly standing next to Anthea Turner and my homemade island.”

Matt Dennis – "Christmas 2000 and the Soundtech Thunderbird 2"

“I was 8 years old in 2000 when Thunderbirds was on repeat on BBC Two, and I was absolutely obsessed. I would scramble for the TV remote on Tuesday teatimes to catch the latest episode preview before the news came on.
Me and my friends would play Thunderbirds in the playground—we were the Tracy boys and the vehicles! I even drew Thunderbirds and the pod vehicles to put on my wall.
That year, I asked for the VHS and the Thunderbirds Annual for Christmas, but the toy I really wanted was the Soundtech Thunderbird 2. I didn’t even put it on the list, because there had been a news story saying how hard Thunderbirds toys were to get that year.
But then, Christmas morning. I opened the last present from my grandparents… and it was Thunderbird 2.
The Soundtech one. With the Mole. With Thunderbird 4 in the pod. And the iconic sound chip: ‘Thunderbird 2, understand you’re at danger zone. FAB.’
I later found out my grandparents had been away on the coast and found it in a local toy shop. I still have that Thunderbird 2 to this day. The paint is fading and the button doesn’t work, but it’s still my Thunderbird 2—a treasured possession from two very special people."
