September 13th, 1999; famously the date that Earth’s moon was blown out of orbit by a massive nuclear explosion – well, at least in Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s 1975 sci-fi spectacular Space:1999! Every year fans of the classic series celebrate all things 1999 on September 13th, otherwise known as Breakway Day! And this year’s Breakaway Day promises to be one of the biggest and best yet! Read on…
The celebrations begin tomorrow with the latest episode of the Gerry Anderson Podcast, featuring the first part of an interview with Doctor Mathias himself, actor Anton Phillips! Might Space:1999 also put in an appearance on the Randomiser? There’s only way to find out – tune in tomorrow!
On Tuesday we’ll be posting an interview with writer and director Jeffrey Morris, who will be launching a Kickstarter programme on Breakaway Day to raise funds to produce a feature length documentary entitled The Eagle Has Landed, celebrating the Eagle transporter from Space:1999!
On Wednesday September 13th you can also catch a Space:1999 livestream event with David Munday and Jack Knoll, starting on our YouTube and Facebook pages at 7pm! And we hear they might be joined by some special guests – fingers crossed!
There’ll also be several exciting merchandise launches over the next few days, including the special Breakaway Day 2023 t-shirt! We’ll be announcing the winner of our Super Space Theater t-shirt design poll too, but even more exciting will be the announcements regarding one or two projects that must remain top secret for just a few more days…
…however, we can promise that if you have fond childhood memories of reading Space:1999 comics while simultaneously flying a model Eagle around and making wooshing noises…well, we might just be able to help you recapture those bygone days! (All except the wooshing noises. You’ll have to make those yourselves!)
There’s an exciting week ahead for Space:1999 fans as we celebrate Breakaway Day – and stand by for more unexpected surprises along the way!
