Being the month in which many of the most popular shows of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson were first broadcast, September is always an important month for Anderson fans – and 2023 will be no exception!
As well as being the month in which such classic shows as UFO, Joe 90 and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons all began airing in the UK, the first episodes of both seasons of Space:1999 were each first aired in September. That alone would be a good reason to celebrate Space:1999 Day in September, but September 13th is the obvious day to take that honour. Not only is it the date on which the Moon left orbit during the explosion-filled climax of the show’s first episode Breakaway, series star Barbara Bain also celebrates her birthday on September 13th!
Thunderbirds also premiered on British television in September 30th 1965, and so the annual International Thunderbirds Day celebrations each September 30th have become much looked forward to by fans of the series. In previous years Thunderbirds Day has played host to exciting announcements, merchandise launches, and events both online and in person.
This year’s Space:1999 Day on September 13th 2023 and Thunderbirds Day on September 30th 2023 promise to deliver all that and more, as part of celebrating the two classic television shows created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and beloved by fans around the world to this day. We’ll have more news shortly of online events – including livestreams with Jack Knoll and David Munday for both Days – plus exciting new merchandise launches and news of upcoming productions!
Space:1999 Day 2023 and Thunderbirds Day 2023 are almost here – the countdown starts now!
