Stand by for action! Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s 1964 classic Stingray will be coming to Talking Pictures TV next month. Following on from Talking Pictures’ successful broadcasts of Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds, the much-loved archive TV channel will now be showing Britain’s first-ever Supermarionation TV series made in colour.
Stingray debuted on our television screens in October 1964 and was the third production from A.P. Films to be billed as being ‘filmed in Supermarionation’. The underwater sci-fi series follows the exploits of the super-sub Stingray, flagship of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol. Piloted by Captain Troy Tempest, along with Lieutenant ‘Phones’ Sheridan and the beautiful underwater heroine Marina, Stingray kept the peace in the far-flung future of the 2060s, encountering many underwater alien races in its adventures – some friendly, others less so, including the villainous underwater despot Titan.
The 39-episode series saw A.P. Films continuing their output of Cold War-centred, sci-fi adventure productions, with spectacular special effects and sophisticated puppetry, all designed to bring Stingray‘s imaginative underwater science-fiction world to life. Its success would pave the way for A.P. Films’ next venture – Thunderbirds.
Stingray will begin showing on Talking Pictures on Saturday the 2nd of March at 3PM, with the series continuing every following Saturday at the same time.
