The Gerry Anderson Blog: 2025 in Review

Stand by for retrospectives! 2025 is drawing to a close, ending a thrillingly significant year for the worlds of Gerry Anderson - 2025 has marked 60 years of Thunderbirds and 50 years of Space: 1999. Throughout this year, we've been celebrating both of these anniversaries with spectacular series of releases, announcements, and other adventures.

Across the Official Gerry Anderson blog in particular, we've spent this year busily uplifting Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, and plenty more of Gerry Anderson's incredible creations. Let's take a look back then at some of the best moments throughout the blog for this exciting year!

Landmark Anniversaries

Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, New Captain Scarlet, and TV Century 21 have all enjoyed hugely significant anniversaries this year. In celebration of Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 in particular, we asked you to pick your favourite episodes from both series for a special series of articles. Our Thunderbirds Deep Dives have been providing in-depth critical explorations of the top ten episodes of Thunderbirds, as chosen by you. Elsewhere, we've been highlighting your favourite episodes of Space: 1999 with our 10 Facts About... articles, counting down 10 unique facts about your chosen episodes.

Our most recent entry in the Thunderbirds Deep Dives is Sun Probe, while our Space: 1999 listicles climaxed with an investigative look at ten facts about Dragon's Domain. We've also been celebrating both of these series with a pair of in-depth retrospective celebrations of both series, Countdown to Rescue and Destination Moonbase Alpha, both of which examine the production histories and celebrate the lasting legacies of both series.

We've also been donning our detective caps and casting our investigative eyes over some intriguingly precise aspects regarding a pair of mysteries surrounding Thunderbirds and Space: 1999. In The Second Countdown, we've been examining the unusual nature of Thunderbirds' second series being only six episodes long, while in Investigating Zero-G, we unbox just how Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's half-hour pilot script for Space: 1999 compares and contrasts with George Bellak and Christopher Penfold's Breakaway. Often the target of harsh criticism for its outlandish premise, Space: 1999's 50th anniversary has also prompted us to come to the defence of the philosophical Year 1 and the light-hearted Year 2. From episodic investigations to series celebrations, Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 have been covered in painstaking detail and engaging variety throughout the blog!

We haven't been forgetting New Captain Scarlet's 20th anniversary or TV Century 21's 60th anniversary, either. Instruments of Reconstruction takes you on a colossal deep dive into the history of New Captain Scarlet's creation, packed with retrospective quotes from those who made the series possible. We've also been counting down our top 10 episodes of New Captain Scarlet, celebrating the series' vehicular hardware, and comparing which of the two incarnations of Captain Scarlet tells the better War of Nerves.

We've marked TV Century 21 in a number of fascinating ways. These include counting down the top ten stories from the classic comic; artist biographies on Frank Bellamy, Ron Embleton, Mike Noble, and others; and explorations of the comic's secret heroes who fleshed out the shared universe between Gerry Anderson's creations

Other Adventures

Away from Thunderbirds and Space: 1999's landmark anniversaries, we've been busily celebrating more of the Andersons' worlds on the Official Gerry Anderson blog. Terrahawks has been enjoying a revival in popularity of sorts with the series' appearing on both the Official Gerry Anderson YouTube channel and ITV Retro (which is also host to other fantastic cult sci-fi TV gems). We've been counting down out top 10 episodes of Terrahawks to tie in with the series' presence on our YouTube channel, all 39 episodes of which can be enjoyed entirely for free! Another Gerry Anderson series making a return is Supercar, which enjoyed its debut on Talking Pictures earlier in the year. Read up on our top 10 episode countdown of the marvel of the age!

2025 also saw the electrifying finale to our Stingray multimedia saga, Stingray: Deadly Uprising, with the release of Stingray Comic Anthology Vol. 2: Battle Lines. Set within the timeline of the classic 1964 underwater Supermarionation series, Deadly Uprising's multitude of thrilling, unpredictable events makes for an exciting entry in the Stingray canon. Discover what makes Deadly Uprising such a wonderfully authentic take on telling brand new, classically styled Stingray stories with our retrospective of the saga.

We've been investigating Stingray further with Stingray's Underwater Zeitgeist, examining just how exactly the series reflects real-world developments in underwater exploration, submarine technology, and more. Thinking more about real-world impacts of Supermarionation, Supercar: My Marvel of the Age sees our website editor, Fred McNamara, re-evaluating his changing relationship with Supercar, a series he'd previously struggled to enjoy, but has been finding some most satisfactory aspects about this underrated early entry in the world of Supermarionation.

We've been greatly enjoying having a variety of Doctor Who legends as guest stars on the Gerry Anderson Podcast, including Nicola Bryant, Sophie Aldred, and Paul McGann. As well as sharing her memories of growing up watching Stingray and Thunderbirds, Sophie was kind enough to share her dissertation examining Thunderbirds which she wrote while at university in the 1980s. Discover just what Sophie Aldred had to say about the history of Thunderbirds and the art of puppetry in Ace's Fantastic Futures!

Events, Screenings & New Gerry Anderson Series

Our growing line-up of original home entertainment releases of Gerry Anderson's classic creations has gone up a level thanks to our newly formed home media partnership with ITV Studios. Our agreement, announced earlier this year, allows Anderson Entertainment to produce newly made Blu-ray and 4K home entertainment releases.

At the centre of this exciting partnership is our forthcoming Thunderbirds 60th Anniversary Collectors Edition Blu-ray, which presents Gerry and Sylvia's 1965 Supermarionation epic in pristine form. The Blu-ray is jam-packed with a stunning array of bonus features - including the much-anticipated home media release of Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes, the secrets of which you can read up on with our investigative feature. We've also been releasing Blu-ray releases of the Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 Super Space Theatre compilation movies and a thrilling 4K Steelbook release of Trapped in the Sky and Terror in New York City.

In anticipation of this 4K release, September saw over 200 cinemas snap up the opportunity to screen these classically regarded episodes in a spectacular double-feature that met with a rapturous response from fans old and young. You can read nearly 200 audience responses in Your Reactions to the Thunderbirds 4K Restoration Double-Bill Experience! A slightly lesser celebrated Gerry Anderson series has also been enjoying a renewed lease of life in high-definition - Space Precinct! Our Space Precinct 30th Anniversary Collectors Edition Blu-ray brings Gerry Anderson's final live-action TV series to life like never before. Read up on the secrets of restoring Demeter City for the cult series to look and sound better than ever!

2025 has also seen another of Gerry Anderson's later-day concepts receiving a rebirth, one which was never fully realised - until now! Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, Mr Morris Productions, Warner Bros. Animation have partnered with Anderson Entertainment to develop Hit Squad, a spy-fi action series devised by Gerry Anderson himself. Hit Squad is an espionage action-comedy set in 1990's London and follows the daring adventures of an international team of talented spies hellbent on putting death before dishonour as they battle the murky world of underground villainy. Hit Squad was initially developed by Gerry Anderson in 1983 alongside production of Terrahawks. This exciting revival of a long-dormant Gerry Anderson concept remains in development.

In Memoriam

2025 has brought some sad passings from various actors who starred in Gerry Anderson production, with an abundance of lengthily and distinguished careers across film, television, and the stage among them. Two of the most notable passings have included Space: 1999's Clifton Jones and Prentis Hancock. They also include Jean Marsh (UFO), Christopher Benjamin (The Protectors), Donald Pelmear (UFO), Kenneth Colley (The Protectors), Stanley McGeagh (UFO) and Jill Freud (Torchy the Battery Boy). Our thoughts are with their friends and families.

All I want to say to you guys is….thank you! You and all your works, especially Thunderbirds, have got me through a life-changing year. With everything resorting to freedom of speech and conversation now that Grandma has died and now that I have been to therapy, you have been a significant part of my journey. So, I’m going to say it, with a little tear in me eye: FAB!
